Northern Magnolias

The sun was warm but the wind was chill.
You know how it is with an April day
When the sun is out and the wind is still,
You’re one month on in the middle of May.
But if you so much as dare to speak,
A cloud comes over the sunlit arch,
A wind comes off a frozen peak,
And you’re two months back in the middle of March.

from Bereft by Robert Frost

In the Catskill Mountains of New York, Magnolia x soulangiana is a popular landscape tree and one of the first to bloom.  They are deciduous and pink unlike the evergreen tree you see in the South.  Would love one near my cottage!

What is your favorite early spring blooming tree?

Until next time, stay shabby!

Beautiful words and imagery, Sandy! I have to say that my VERY favorite is the lilac! It makes my heart smile and transports me, in my mind and heart, back to the hills of PA. Blessings to you , my sweet girl, I hope you are doing well. I know this will be a year of "firsts" for you as you start your life on a new plan. xo Diana

Sooo pretty, Sandy! I have to agree with Diana. I love lilacs. There was a huge purple one in my backyard when I was child, and I always loved picking the blooms and bringing them into my bedroom. Sweet memories... :) Praying that you have a happy and blessed Easter, my friend. ♥

I have an almond bush that reminds me of miniature magnolias when it blooms.

I love Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson poetry; they are the perfect words to pair with photography.

Dogwood trees are the only pretty trees around here with pretty blooms. If I could have any blooming tree, it would be a cherry blossom tree...mostly because I love pink:)

Happy Easter!

Hi Sandy, I love the weeping cherry trees. I planted one from those mail order catalogs a few year back. It came and was about a foot high! Its been 5 years and its about 6 feet tall now. Still no flowers:( I think you should treat yourself and get one for your studio!

Hi Sandy,
We nearly bought a Magnolia tree on Friday but i hesitated as i am not sure if it would grow at the coast,i adore Magnolia trees and they are popular here in England and this time of year the displays are beautiful.
I am waiting for my lilac to bloom i love them so.
One near your cabin would be just wonderful xxx
