Photo by Trevor Tondro for The New York Times
I read Joyce Wadler's feature on us.
I laughed! I cried!
I didn't recognize my life. It's different when you're cleaning the coop.
Trevor Tondro's photographs are...beyond words. Spellbinding.
I just left him alone and he waved his magic wand of a camera.
Please have a look at the story!
In the Catskills, Comfort in a Gingerbread House
I'm delighted the Times mentioned a few of my pretty handmade wares
from talented artists. Though I gave names and links for everything in sight,
not everything made it in (including the URL for my blog)!
Today, someone asked how to ‘get the look’.
The short answer: buy handmade, buy salvage.
Here is a complete listing:
Vintage-inspired printed paper book covers under the mirror
and wallpaper painting in the loft – artist Beth Neumann of Tattered Vintage
Pink sachet with silk roses and rhinestone brooch – Roberta Comeau,
Whispers From the Past. No web presence but I can put you in touch with her.
Demi-lune table under mirror – Andes Antiques & Art,
173 Main Street, Andes, NY 13731 845-676-3420
Email: popperartsy2@aol.com
Oval mirror over mantel – Vintage Chic
Architectural inspiration – Driving around the Catskills,
and the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company
The Small House Society
Miscellaneous: My handmade linen dress was $2 at a yard sale,
my pink wellies were $30 on clearance at Tractor Supply,
$2/yard Wal-Mart lace graces the loft,
and I made ZuZu’s hair bows out of wired organza ribbon from Michael’s.
Obviously, we have excellent yard sales in the Delhi-Bovina-Andes area.
If you're up one Saturday, treat yourself to lunch at these restaurants:
Crossroads Café, Rt. 28 & Rt. 10 (Main Street), Delhi, NY – art on the walls, coffee bar,
WiFi, sweet staff, old New Yorkers in the magazine rack, open year round. 607-746-7007
Russell’s, Main Street, Bovina, NY – eggs sandwiches from local hens, market.
Lucky Dog – Main Street, Hamden. Café, organic food, antiques.
Great shops offering recycled wares:
Clementine Vintage Clothing - 7 Main St, Andes, NY, 13731. (845) 676-3888
Steinway Books – 114 Main St., Delhi, NY (845) 746-8060. Now featuring a café.
Until next time, stay shabby!

Hi, Sandy,
I found you this morning via the New York Times. Your project and your story touched me immediately and I went to see if you have a blog. I am dazzled by your creativity and your gift for synthesizing beauty out of the tips of your fingers. I love it when a news outlet like the NYT discovers someone extraordinary and I think that your story has aspects that touch all of us in one way or another. For me it is the overcoming of huge obstacles, obstacles that can cause a person to remain frozen in fear forever - and pushing and shoving until a pearl of unparalleled beauty emerges. Oh, yes, that's a true, true feat. I wish you congratulations and many fantastic, creative endeavors.

Sandy -- what an inspiration you are! I just discovered your blog this morning through another and have posted about your undertaking on my blog. I have wanted to convert a little building too, but mine is not even here yet! Now I know I will be working feverishly to get to that point. I'm inspired -- my husband probably not so much . . . I don't think I could do all the restoration that you did without him. Fantastic job! I'm sure I'll be a frequent visitor.
Teresa
I cannot believe this! I am so excited. My husband came home from work and brought up your studio on line for me to see. I was in love and told him, I want one. Oh my gosh, you have a blog! I went back to the NYT article to look at the photos (yet again) and I found the link. Fabulous!
What a wonderful eye you have. Rachel Ashwell herself might learn a thing or two from you.
I am VERY impressed with how you did nearly everything yourself; I was motivated to stop whining, get up off my duff, and assemble a table that's been languishing in the Ikea box for a month! Thank you for the inspiration. Vous avez vraiment du style.
Hi Sandy,
I am so glad that I found your blog. I had no idea you even had one. All my friends and family have been sending me links to your NY Times article and I read that Fifi and Dan are doing a story on you too. Last year they were at my home and did a story about our home.
You have inspired me to re-furbish my 1920's pool house ~ by myself! I'm ready with my tools!
We have some mutual friends. If you have a moment stop by and say hello. Love your story.
Ciao,
Suzanne

Dear Sandy,
Thank you so much for your beautiful, inspirational tiny Victorian cottage!
My husband and I are restoring and renovating a lovely old Victorian home in Michigan, that was built in 1887.
When I saw the lovely Victorian architectural elements that you incorporated in your cottage design(matching window headers, porch brackets, matching back porch screen doors, etc...) I thought that they would blend perfectly with the existing Victorian elements that have managed to survive in this beautiful old home.
I began searching for your architectural elements as handcrafted Victorian reproductions, but alas, can not seem to locate the artist / manufacturer.
Could you please let me know where I might be able to find the artist or company that manufactured your lovely architectural elements that you used in your tiny Victorian cottage?
Thank you so very much!
Warmest Regards,
Marcella, Michigan
